BendBroadband Vault recently announced it has agreed to purchase enough carbon offsets over the next four years to become a “carbon neutral” company. The offsets were purchased through Woodlands Carbon Company of Salem, Oregon, and will help to offset the energy used and carbon dioxide emitted from running the data center.
Carbon neutrality is a relatively new phenomenon that has come about over the last couple of years because of the growing concern on how companies – particularly power generation and petroleum refineries – are impacting the environment. The release of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from these companies has been linked to global climate change. In order to offset these “carbon footprints,” responsible companies such as BendBroadband are looking at ways to give back to the environment. By purchasing carbon offsets through companies such as the Woodlands Carbon Company, BendBroadband is effectively neutralizing their carbon footprint, along with supporting local Oregon businesses and landowners in the process.
Woodlands Carbon Company is a company created from the Oregon Small Woodlands Association (OSWA) and serves as an aggregator of carbon offsets. The company brings together forest landowners in Oregon whose large tracts of Douglas fir and other trees help to absorb and sequester carbon dioxide. Currently, these landowners represent nearly 2,000 acres and approximately 12,000 tons of carbon offsets per year.
The carbon offsets are the latest addition in a long line of environmentally friendly and eco-initiatives by the Vault. Kyoto Cooling, photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and Blue Sky renewable energy are just the start to the efforts that BendBroadband is putting toward its pursuit of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
